010: THE THINKING BEHIND THE ZING CREED

Viacrucis10

I am a retired London science teacher and in November 2012  I wrote a non-theist creed encapsulating many of the points that might be supported by a “christian atheist” (see wikipedia and wikiquote), a “jesuist” (Wikipedia’s term), “Jesusist” (Anarchopedia’s term) or “Jesusite” (Philip Pullman’s term).

This was initially undertaken as an exercise to “fill the gap” found in traditional creeds which jump from “born of the virgin Mary” to “suffered under Pontius Pilate” leaving out the entire life and teachings of Jesus on the way!

I was influenced by Don Cupitt and the Sea of Faith movement in Britain and the work of the Jesus Seminar in America, as well as by the authors David Boulton and Philip Pullman .

The word “Zing” in the title is from Matthew 5:13 (Scholars Version translation) and refers to the taste of salt in a meal. It is an Americanism for flavour or zest.
