951: Gloucestershire peasants go on a crusade

This is a fantastic story about my beloved home county of Gloucestershire in the West of England. In the 12th century recruiting agents went around the remote villages whipping up hatred of the ‘infidels’ who had taken over the holy city of Jerusalem. The peasants, duly enraged, and armed with pitchforks and the like, set off to repulse the enemy and retake Jerusalem.

On arriving in the county town of Gloucester, which none of them had been to before, they assumed it must be Jerusalem already, and they started asking people where the infidels were so that they could kill them on the spot!
