I won’t give his name, but he is one of the most influential Tibetan lamas in the UK, and indeed all round the world with 100 centres in 23 countries. He has many followers among British people, and is regarded by them as a great spiritual leader. My friend A has been a devotee for decades, and has often told me about how much he has gained from his meetings with this man. Now the mood is darkening in this large group of believers. E-mails are circulating, accusations are being whispered behind closed doors, and the guru’s devotees are wondering what they should do.
It seems the guru doesn’t see what the fuss is about. He claims his sexual dalliances with many of the young women in the group are all part of their spiritual education: he is helping them achieve Buddhist goals!
It is as if religions of all stripes attract men like this. The Bishop of Gloucester and the Imam of Cardiff , have been mentioned in this blog only recently. The Vatican treasurer, Australian Cardinal Pell is in the headlines, and the scale of child abuse coming to light in the Aussie RC church is unbelievable. And a Hindu guru in India is up on 2 rape charges.
Covering up is the knee jerk reflex of priests. Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey rewarded the Bishop of Gloucester instead of reporting him to the police. He only got a slap on the wrist for this when the story came out. According to one Anglican vicar I spoke to, the Archbishop should have been defrocked.
