Names: Keith and Caroline Baker
Christian Denomination: Salvation Army (former officers)
Place : County Armagh, Northern Ireland
Date: 2005-2013; court case 2017
Accusation: This married pair of Salvation Army officers took advantage of a woman with ‘serious mental defects’ that they ‘befriended’ during their work. They took her to their home in Ulster and imprisoned her in one small room without carpets, heating or a light bulb. They removed the door handle so she couldn’t escape and fed her on Quality Street chocolates. For eight years she was treated as a sex slave and not allowed out, not even to the doctor or dentist. She was repeatedly raped by the husband and abused by the wife. She became traumatised and emaciated. The bathroom floor was covered with faeces and her bedding was filthy. A permanent video camera filmed their activities. The victim did not even know the name of her captors. Her husband back in England had reported her missing in 2004. When she was eventually freed, she cried ‘Yes, free!’ but she was so malnourished she had to have most of her teeth removed.
This unimaginable evil was perpetrated by two people who claimed to be Christians.
Punishment: the judge gave Keith Baker 15 years in prison, and Caroline Baker 3 years.
