Traditional Christian teaching on same-sex relationships is perpetuating mental-health problems among lesbian, gay, and bisexual people(LGB) in Britain, according to a new report. Sexual minorities are 2 to 3 times more likely to report long-standing emotional or psychological problems than their heterosexual counterparts. These problems stem from the stigma, hostility, and discrimination directed at LGB people, and the church must bear much of the blame for this. Most Christian denominations teach that homosexuality is in some way less than God’s ideal, indeed the church may be justly considered institutionally homophobic. This negative view has a hugely distressing impact on large numbers of LGB people and leaves countless numbers of them living lives of forced secrecy and dishonesty.  The resultant anguish and distress often leads to spiritual, mental, and physical harm, and, in the worst of cases to suicide.
