26: WHAT CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIANS BELIEVE (and I don’t)

“Conservative Christianity”  is usually synonymous with “Evangelical Christianity” or “Born Again Christianity.”
Christians whose theology is conservative are defined by the following beliefs:-

(1) Biblical inerrancy  i.e. fundamentalism;

(2) God is (a) all powerful,
(b) all-knowing
(c) perfect
(d) creator of the universe
(e) still ruling it today
(f) judgemental and punishing rather than a god of love and mercy

(3) Jesus’ life was sinless. He was divine and born of a virgin;

(4) Satan exists;

(5) Moses wrote the Pentateuch (First five books of the Bible);

(6) Salvation comes through faith and God’s grace, not through good works;

(7) Faith is central to an evangelical’s life, and they try to share it with non-Christians;

(8) To be born again and go to heaven:  Confess your sins
Accept Christ as your (personal) saviour.

How evangelicals are seen by most Americans:
Anti-gay
Anti-feminist
Anti-premarital sex
Anti-abortion
Anti-immigrant
Anti-environmental
Pro-war
Pro-capital punishment
Pro-conservative Republican (iv)
